We
are proud to once again present a new body of work from MI artist
Jill Henry.
Continuing
the evolution evidenced in her 2007 exhibition, the current works
similarly begin with an ethereal, zen-like sense of calm. However,
the new work gives the viewer a sence of movement, both physically,
and spatially.
Ms.
Henry states “I am inspired by natural spaces and phenomena,
especially those which evoke sublime visual experiences. The aim
of my work is to engage myself and the viewer in a similar way,
but through virtual, imagined surroundings”.
In
this, she succeeds brilliantly. The added layers of texture lend
even more emphasis to the spatial aspect (and impact) of the work.
So, too, does her treatment of the “light” in each
work. Progressing from “Scotia” to “Summer Gale”
to “Canopy”, for example, one can almost feel the
luminous object within approaching, seemingly splitting the virtual
and joining the actual. As a result, the viewer is drawn in even
more deeply, becoming a participant in whatever is going on inside
(and now to some degree, outside) the canvas.
Where
Ms. Henry’s early work had been an investigation into obsession,
excess
and intersection, and the previous series a study on relationships
and spontaneity, the current exhibition holds forth the promise
of true interaction between the virtual and physical worlds –
an investigation into the essence of ones “surroundings”.
