Eric
Bladholm got his start in glass early. At age 11, his
older sister Sharon taught him how to make stained and
leaded glass, which he pursued until his first year of
college, where Eric discovered the art of glass blowing.
After five years of intensive glass and fine art studies
at California College of Arts & Crafts, and a season
in Europe working with several renowned glass masters,
Eric returned to Chicago to meet the challenges of building
a studio of his own. Several years of working in the construction
trades and a partnership with his sister's studio (Opal
Glass Studios) evolved into the formation of Chicago Glassworks
almost 15 years ago. Chicago Glassworks is now a state
of the art glass blowing facility and artist's studio
custom built into a Refurbished Art Deco iron foundry,
centrally located on Chicago's Near Southside.
The
glass created at Chicago Glassworks is all made by the
artist himself. The colors and textures of nature are
the departure point for Eric Bladholm's innovative explorations
with hand blown glass. Summers in-Door County Wisconsin
as a child, and more recent extensive explorations of
the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines have provided
inspiration that takes form in richly layered bowls
and platters, expressive sculptural vessels and custom
lighting. Best known for his "what perfume bottles
want to be when they grow up" large, sculptural
vessels, Eric has also produced light fixtures for many
national and international designers, along with his
own unique glass, bronze and wood sculptures.
